i'm down with opc

there are so many amazing vegan cookbooks that are coming out this fall that frankly, i'm honored just to be counted among them.

first we have veganomican, the latest cookbook from the sexiest awesomest vegan chefs and cookbook authors, isa chandra moskowitz and terry hope romero. i was lucky enough to be a tester for this cookbook, and let me tell you: there are some instant favorites in here that you and your entire family will go nuts over. really. and your family will think that you are a total badass cook all of the sudden, and you won't even have to correct them, because owning this cookbook will make you a better cook. one of my favorite things about this book is that there is a considerable section in the front that deals with how to cook pretty much any vegetable in a delicious way, which you know that you need, baby, because you aren't eating enough vegetables. i'm sorry, what was that? you're eating how much? you're supposed to eat about six times that amount. i know. so you better get this book.

i'm also really excited about two upcoming zines made by wildly talented pals of mine. the first is a 76 page cookzine called papa tofu, by my friend kittee. kittee's website of delicious vegan recipes has been around since before blogs even existed, people. and now you can have her wisdom right there in your hands. yay! i'm also super-excited about my friend katie's new issue of her food zine don't eat off the sidewalk, which will be about holiday food! this is a must-have pocket-sized bible for those of you who have to cook all of your own food at family holiday dinners. keep your eyes glued to both of those blogs for info on how to get those zines when they're ready.

i am so down with other people's cookbooks.

pre-order yellow rose recipes now!

while the cookbook won't ship until the first week of december, you can order it now now now from herbivore!

thanks so much to josh for setting up pre-ordering.

i know a lot of people were wondering if the book would be ready in time for holiday gifts and the answer is a resounding: "YES!"

(no telling yet whether it will beat the baby here or not.)

convergence! (a contest)

if you've been reading closely, or have seen me lately—i'm hard to miss—you might know that i'm eight months pregnant.

when my publisher and i originally discussed dates and timelines for the release of the cookbook, we sketched out a loose timeline that would see my cookbook entering the world at least six weeks before my child.

and then i was nauseated for a full month of my first trimester, and couldn't come up with recipes, let alone cook them, so we extended testing for a few weeks. and then we had things like family vacations, animal rights conferences, vegfests, gatherings, and magazine deadlines that pushed us back a little further. and then it turns out that the printer who can do the whole book in a week charges a whole lot more than the printer who takes three weeks, for the same quality of work.

and here we are: it's the beginning of november; the parenting website that i check every few days chirps at me today: "only 37 days to go!" but we all know that babies don't have calendars on the walls of the womb, so that kid could show up any day now, or not until mid-december.

so here is my question to you: which is coming first, the baby or the book?

you have one full week from today to leave your guess in the comments section.

when we know for sure which of our much-anticipated packages arrives first, i'll randomly (really and truly random, i might employ a cat paw) choose one of the correct guesses and send you a free copy of the cookbook.

the time for proofing is upon us

on thursday, my trusty publisher dropped off the black and white proofs of the book and i've been on the couch with my pen making furious little corrections and adjustments ever since. this is hard work, this book writing business. this is the first of two rounds of proofs and then we go to press before the end of the month!

meanwhile, i'm documenting everything that i eat again. this is something that i like to do for a full month every six months or so, just as a reminder to myself to keep things interesting and try to avoid eating the same things every day. if you'd like to follow along, here is the set on flickr that i update daily.
